JakusB wins Chapter 4!

JakusB has won Chapter 4 of Chance Encounter with their entry Unwelcomed Help. Congratulations and good work JakusB!

Again, this round had some intense competition with Tony's entry Back in Black: Out of Time, bryceanderic's entry True Colors, and a comedic sping with Dynomar's submission Homerun.

Great work by everybody this round! Thanks for your patience while we tallied the last judge votes coming in over the holiday weekend.

Just a reminder that JakusB, FungusRidden and joshutk are ineligible to compete until the final chapter, so we need your submissions next round!

JakusB you've won a $250 VISA Gift Card, a really cool Balance Beam from Trig Industries, Retail Value $249.50, a "Video for the Web" training DVD by VASST, Retail Value $80, and The DV Rebel's Guide: An All-Digital Approach to Making Killer Action Movies on the Cheap by Stu Maschwitz, Retail Value of $44.99.

Also, JakusB is now eligible to compete in the final chapter for the $2,000.00 Cash Grand Prize.

Bring on Chapter 5! Who's submitting next round?

Good job homie

I want to know what the judges think of my video ,even if they didn't vote for it. It doesn't help when just one out of 5 commented, i want to know what they all think. Can we make this happen, judges?

Hell yeah Tony

Feedback is a major part of why we entered!

Dang, this community's getting demanding :P

Seems like a lot to ask these nice professionals to volunteer more of their valuable time.

I think you had a whole page full of critiques. And, if you read some of the judge's comments, you gather even more insight.

The main issue with your entry, for me, was that the story splits in half; The MIB has April and KC is on the loose with the notebook. So unless the guy in the SUV is the same as the guy on the other end of the MIB's phone conversation, the next chapter would be spent discovering that April doesn't have her notebook, which now makes KC a target. Jake's entry simplifies the story by making the menace clear, with room for partial explanation in the next clip, which leads to the wrap up.

Your entry was clever, but perhaps too over-complicated for this stage in the story.

Thanks moon! I totally understand that. We debated sticking her in the watch and splitting the cast but we figured a lot of entries play it safe so why not try to "shake things up". (note to self: do not shake things up!)

The critiques in the thread were great, and the judges comments were also helpful, but I think we really want to know what SUCKED. Obviously we did something "wrong" or we wouldn't have had (a record-setting) four judges go against us,

As useful as a lot of the responses were, we really didn't get many specifics like "in the shot where you do [whatever], it made me cringe because [some reason]" or "when you do something like [whatever], you need to make sure you don't do [some mistake we made]". Something general like "it's cheesy" or something else about how it might impact future rootclip rounds isn't as helpful to us as filmmakers. (it is of course helpful as rootclip submitters, and therefore certainly welcomed!)

And as for the judges valuable time... They already have their opinions; maybe spend 5 minutes typing them?

Sometimes, I don't think it boils down to something sucking. Sometimes, it boils down to really getting something delicious on a silver platter, which I'd vouch happened here. Your entry was great, Tony, but Jakus's was also great, and right on target (apparently) with what the judges anticipated a winner for the round should look and feel like.

If you want a few specifics of things to try changing, though, I'd offer these. I didn't think Ryan seemed even remotely capable of stopping the MIB, so it seemed almost laughable when he said he'd take care of him. Then, the spar between them was cut a little slow -- the energy wasn't quite there, and a yelp and some sickening crunches really would've given it some power (nice touch with the blood, however). I think designating a more classical-style of score would've helped garner my vote, since music can have so much power and -- well -- the techno-rock piece may be badass, but not as effective at hyping emotion and drama.

I realize my opinions may seem worthless, considering I made a stupid musical, but my squad actually entered a very serious entry in Chapter 2 that ultimately lost by 2 user votes. We also have been labeled "cheesy," so perhaps you and I are cut from the same bolt of cloth. ;) Hopefully some of those considerations might help you win Chapter 5!

And, congrats again, Jakus! I remain enamored with your entry, and especially your score -- AWESOME!

Yeah whether or not he was capable was almost a joke we had in there. The lack of yelping is also an indication that he is in fact quite badass but the MIB is just that much more powerful.

So yeah we're pretty cheesy... lol

The score was a just a dropped in stock instrumental. I will freely admit that music, and audio in general, is one of our weakest areas.

Thanks for you feedback sir! It is much appreciated!

@privatehuff, are you guys submitting again for chapter 5? I really hope so.

You better enter!

I'd like to hear the judges thoughts as well, like privatehuff said, they've already formed those opinions while watching, why not write them down, one could possibly gain some insight off the comments, but 'professional' feedback would be great

9/4/2008 at 7:52 p.m. by jaytaylorthe1

I mean this in the most polite way possible. If you want judge's critiques then win!

9/4/2008 at 8:12 p.m. by allen

Great idea! The judges would love to comment on all videos, but they are super busy professionals and they don't always have time to put in critique on all videos. So for now we'll just have to be supportive and help each other critique the videos in a postive manner.

9/4/2008 at 9:58 p.m. by bryceanderic

Jay, that's an interesting bit of logic there

9/5/2008 at 1:12 a.m. by davidmoon

@Allen -- Like, "That positively sucked!?"

I'm with Jay. This is a contest after all.

9/5/2008 at 2:06 a.m. by bryceanderic

The judges opinions aren't the prize, being a contest doesn't rule out the benefit of their feedback, especially when potentially facing those same judges again, but..... we'll have to wait and see

Looking back, I think you can get a feeling from the judges of what they are looking for. Until this round, they were quite split in their like and dislikes.

It's like a job interview -- you really don't know how they think of you, unless you get the job.
