I liked all of this weeks entries. Minor problems with everyone (we will talk more about this in class). Joel & No, would have liked to see just a bit of light on the faces (make-believe dash lights on him, dome light so she could see to dial, etc.) Think a minimal amount of detail on the faces would have added as opposed to detracting from the mood. Again, moving down a path story-wise that I would not have chosen.

Against The Clock - liked the combination of shots giving us her running fall (wish she had struggled instead of lying still).

Render This, thank you for the continuity of the make-up (cuts/bruises) on Kevin's face (something the others neglected).

Team Black Rock - Nice sequence around the chairs (although the hand-held quality almost got a bit too shaky).

The clicking of high heels echoing from pavement. The dramatic camera angles, suspenseful music, the sound effects along with the best acting gives "Midnight Blue" the edge over "The Circle of Death." I wasn't wild about the ending of "Blue," but the totality of the effort overcomes it's shortcomings. Can't wait to see how the groups finish the story!

I'm going to take a line straight from this submission. "Impressive!" Love the tone and the camera work. The sound was superb... did you guys do voice over? This is the kind of work I expected from you guys for sure judging from last week's submission. And yes... it was suspenseful! Great Job!

Top submission this week!

Great!

came together perfectly, just like last time!

I dug it.

11/6/2008 at 4:43 p.m. by reca901

omg, now this is suspenseful, so what happens next...i can't wait.

11/6/2008 at 7:55 p.m. by apcki

Love the camera angles. Good sound and dark lighting. Very suspenseful.

11/6/2008 at 8:08 p.m. by JackElliot

I think the pause in the car when they first stop was a little too long, but the scene with the spinning camera and the "phonezombies" appearing and moving closer was very well done. Definitely the best of the submissions, in my opinion.

11/6/2008 at 8:40 p.m. by MsFren

This is too sci fi for me. Looks nice but no thank you. Not this week guys, sorry.

11/6/2008 at 10:48 p.m. by tnlucas

Really liked camera work.

11/6/2008 at 11:15 p.m. by jscarpin

Nice work guys. Corinne looks pretty hot too.

11/7/2008 at 12:32 a.m. by ccc

this storyline is very weak, looks like you guys watch the sci fi channel too much. maybe your director has a career in cheap, low budget sci fi movies.

11/7/2008 at 12:45 a.m. by GetSilly

Your mom has a career in cheap low budget sci fi movies

11/7/2008 at 1:54 a.m. by oleschreib

Hey, if this is what no budget looks like then I can't wait to see what my guys can do with one! Now, all I can say to the talking heads and their distaste for the theatrical story is... you're beating a dead horse. We get it. You don't dig Sci-Fi. I'm not big hammy accents and sloppy dialogue, but if that's your forte run with it. It's like juggling knifes. It'd probably be a better trick if the guy wasn't covered in scars.

11/7/2008 at 3:37 a.m. by oldysama

Hmm, isn't Heroes sci-fi? Isn't Smallville, or X-files, or a billion other shows that draw ratings like mad? I'm glad some people are willing to go out on a limb and try something unconventional. There are racists, you are a genre-ist!

11/7/2008 at 8:38 a.m. by sjeude

It looks like this team just borrows from other, trendier directing styles for every clip (Sin City, anyone?) -- not very creative. Also, the "suspenseful" scenes are too long, and the "clever" dialogue is just painful. I will concede that the lighting looks pretty fancy. By the way, most people are offended by the sci-fi because it had no reason to be inserted into the story.

11/7/2008 at 9:17 a.m. by daJudge

People who think this story like is too generic... look at the video above and below. NOT very original... gun pointing are played out and boring at least badly done ones anyways....and very 90's. I like this video because it is not predictable or generic. All the other clip, I don't need to watch the second minute and wouldn't miss anything. This one will win for sure now. You might even win Laresse's vote this week... or maybe not. He's a tough cookie to crack.

11/7/2008 at 9:54 a.m. by mmorri24

Ok, seriously, all this talk about to sci-fi or not to sci-fi is really annoying. I agree that the amount of sci-fi this clip is trying to cram into the story is unnecessary. How does she know how to make the phone do that little shockwave-thingie and since when does it even do that? How can she control the "zombies" and not know the code? Every time this group has submitted (other than their first half-assed entry) they have been DESPERATE to get sci-fi into a plot that has nothing to do with sci-fi. People wouldn't be complaining about genre in this clip if this group wasn't humping the crap out of a specific genre. The other directors have at least shown some versatility.

11/7/2008 at 11:09 a.m. by wastoas

You guys should spend your time better and go chase some spirits around.

11/7/2008 at 11:17 a.m. by wastoas

PS....Dajudge is a moron. Take him spirit hunting with yall so he gets out of his dark lonely dorm room.

11/7/2008 at 11:22 a.m. by sookie

she isn't controlling the zombies. oliver is... that's the point. if you need the story explained in brief:

crimson nightmare: annie has captured mark garfield, who she thinks oliver is controlling, and kevin woodland, who was involved in the "society of friends" trying to build this device. oliver, however, did some private work of his own, and figure out how to make phonecalls and control people (it's a stretch, but we had two minutes and none of the other clips were giving any sort of viable story whatsoever). she's trying to get mark to admit he's oliver--but he just isn't. kevin mocks her by saying telling her that she'd see oliver, but it wouldn't be behind the mask of just one person under his control. since, obviously, annie had done prior work on the phone, she knows that it can "do more than just control people." therefore, she uses it to blast kevin and mark and tries to escape.

midnight blue: however, she doesn't have the code to unlock the mode that can control people, she can just use the other shockwave powers the phone has--she's trying to figure it out, but kevin was right, she and her goon's escape are stopped by oliver controlling a bunch of people and trying to intimidate her. but she won't have it--she wants him to confront her face to face.

all this can be picked up on by paying attention to the film clips instead of just dogging them because they look nice and clearly show a lot time, effort, concentration, and attention to detail. all this in just two minutes, and making it clean, good-looking, great-sounding--it really amazes me that people will find anything to bitch about.

also, the other directors haven't shown any versitality, at all: all of their clips are guns and confusing launches off into stories that have as little to do with the first three clips as you're claiming that dusome's does. in fact, the other directors' clips are trite, worn-out, and despite the entertaining acting are all made out to be some kind of joke, or "ironic," somehow. they AREN'T going out on a limb for story--they're completely devoid of it. that's uninteresting and not a challenge at all.

11/7/2008 at 12:03 p.m. by ccc

cell phones with shockwave powers? "society of friends"? cell phone controlled zombies? it's just frustrating that one minute the guy got drugged at a halloween party and the next minute he's in some matrix, jet lee, anime freakshow. the production value is good for a college film project, don't get me wrong but the story and acting are just stupid. go chase spirits, play dungeons and dragons, watch slaior moon or whatever you like to do thats fine but the majorirty of people don't like that crap, thats all i'm saying.

11/7/2008 at 12:24 p.m. by oldysama

Complaints aside, Isn't this what rootclip is about? You are not always going to like where the story leads, as you have no control over exactly how things happen, you have to learn to adapt. Last week is over and done with, this week brings in a new perspective. You change or the times change with you. This week dusome adapts the best I say.

11/7/2008 at 1:02 p.m. by sookie

what I'M saying is that there's no reason to be insulting--you just sound really bitchy and pathetic. no one in the group plays dungeons and dragons or whatever, watches anime, or does any of that junk you're talking about. the "majority of people?" why the hell does sin city or anything you're trying to compare them to exist? all I'M saying is that you're just being a jerk because YOU don't have a preference for something, but you could at least try to appreciate it for what it is and not single it out to some small stereotype. you sound like a prick, and it's a good thing that you (hopefully) don't speak for one of the other groups; if you did, you'd be making them look extremely petty.

11/9/2008 at 12:16 p.m. by albertoloco

Really good camera work. the cinematography of this one tops all the other entries. its really got the "film" look. it will be better to add some music like the piano playing in the 4th chapter. i don't see how it is scifi. only the last part involves some scifi effects. to me, this is the best submission, all the other ones got too much "student work" looks they are not as good as this one. to all the people who thought its uninteresting and too scifi, dont get pissed off because of jealousy. i read through all the comments, its like wtf, we really got some morons here, its like the clan of morons, ustedes deben comer mierda.

11/9/2008 at 5:46 p.m. by JakusB

You know, watching this one a second time through (and rewatching chapter 4), this ones really not too shabby. I think I'll give you guys a vote.

11/10/2008 at 2:40 a.m. by HotRod

Camera circling around continuously kind of makes you dizzy, but aside from that I think you've done a good job with the video. Not really sure about the story though. Doesn't Annie have Oliver's phone (looked like it in Chapter 4)? So how is he still able to program people to come after her, and why would he need it back if he can control people without it? ("I want my phone back now Annie... it wasn't meant for you")

11/10/2008 at 5:46 a.m. by Foutch

Missed last chapter's voting period so I viewed the winner so I could understand what the hell was going on this week. Interesting twist. I've reviewed the comments you've been given this time. I'm amazed at their severity. The clip ends at 1:43 when I view it (showing Annie surrounded by other victims/zombies) but the clip length appears that it should be 2:00 so I can only assume that the missing 17 seconds is where the "shockwave powers" mentioned above are either discussed or demonstrated. And although "sci-fi" is not my preferred style, I certainly don't condemn you for it. Good effort all around.

11/10/2008 at 7:53 a.m. by Foutch

However, after reviewing comments left on each group's submission page I've noticed the harsh criticisms left for each group. The highest number of verbal assault's is on Dusome's page. I've viewed the profiles for these commentators. The most disparaging comments left on Dusome's page (CCC, wastoass, and gagglegeeses) have only voted for TeamBlackRock each time. In correlation, TeamBlackRock's page has irritable comments left by members that have only voted for Dusome each time. Additionally, these voting members have been exchanging jabs at each other via continuous comments. Some negative commentary has been placed on pages by RenderThis, but they've offered constructive criticism instead of pure insult. Not sure why Dusome and TeamBlackRock's fans or members have felt the need to belittle the other's work, but it reflects poorly on these two groups. A RenderThis sole voter chose to deprecate other entries on the RenderThis page. This is undesirable as well. My belief is that commentary should offer suggestion/constructive criticism. All three team's have accomplished desirable submissions, but unacceptable verbal communication. My vote will only be extended to AgainstTheClock not just because of the decent entry, but for appearing to be the only team that does not have friends/members that demean their competitors.

11/10/2008 at 10:08 a.m. by daJudge

funny... just because i spend 5 minutes bashing on bad videos doesn't mean I need to "chase" spirit. Do u mean alcohol or girls? Does that really make you cool? LOL I bet you think it makes you cool. Don't bash on the people... the video are on the judging table here. I am sorrie you people, film student, cannot handle harsh criticism. What do you think will be waiting for you out there?

The real world is harsh, they won't give you constructive criticism at all. They will say you movie sucks and not go see it. So learn to deal with it.

Honestly, all these video SUCKS! They are made from students, who have crappy camera and no budget. Yeah they ALL sucks! Now that have been said, I usually try to point out the good things I see in each video and especially the bad things. If you really want to improve then you would really focus on those comments. Instead of getting your friends to come to your help and defend your video by calling people moron and so on. The moron is the one who insult the people comment instead of leaving helpful comments so you can improve. With that said I would like to say again... All these video sucks!

1) Midnight Blue sucks the least... the name bothers me and the close up shot of the face.

2) Circle of Death sucks and lack suspense, come up with something I haven't seen before. The guy obviously could have killed her before the gun pointing...

3) Not even on the same tier with the other two.

4) Not even on the same tier with the other two.

Next week I hope to see some work from all of you guys that are not so predictable and boring...

ur face sucks,

but seriously, i think it comes down to the judges.
